On September 21, 2026, the Snehalaya Charitable Trust team from Manjeshwar rescued Balakumar and initiated his care and rehabilitation process. On October 18, 2026, he was admitted to Shraddha Centre in Karjat, Maharashtra. Medical evaluation indicated he was likely suffering from schizoaffective disorder. According to his family, he had been struggling with mental health problems for the past six years.
Balakumar is a B.Com graduate and worked as a librarian in Thevaram, Theni district, Tamil Nadu. He left his job two years ago due to health issues. Having lost both parents in childhood, Balakumar was raised by his grandmother and two brothers. His brother is currently employed as a clerk in a court.
According to the family, Balakumar began visiting temples a year ago and sometimes stayed there. Four months ago, during a visit to Guruvayur temple, he lost his belongings and was found wandering helplessly near the railway station, losing contact with his family. No police complaint was filed regarding his disappearance.
After care at Snehalaya and Shraddha Centre, contact was established with his family and necessary steps for reunion were taken. On November 04, 2026, after four months of separation, Balakumar was reunited with his brother and grandmother. The family expressed happiness and emotion upon meeting him again. His brother and grandmother have agreed to take responsibility for his care and further treatment.
Despite the family’s financial difficulties, they have responded positively to continue Balakumar’s care and treatment. The centre has provided two months of necessary medication for his ongoing health. The family has been guided to continue further medical checkups and treatment at the government hospital in Theni, Tamil Nadu.
The care, coordination, and family reunion efforts of Snehalaya Charitable Trust and Shraddha Centre have transformed four months of separation into a joyful reunion. Balakumar’s story is a good example that with proper treatment, continuous medication, and family support, people facing mental health issues can lead a dignified life with their families again.
