26 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಒಂದು ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ ಇತ್ತು “ಅವರು ಇನ್ನೂ ಜೀವಂತರೇ?”

ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ತಿರುವಾರುರ್ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಚಿದಂಬರಂ ಮೂಲದ ಶ್ರೀ ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ (ಮಣಿ) ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಳ, ಶ್ರಮಜೀವಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. ಖಾಸಗಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಚ್‌ಮ್ಯಾನ್ ಕೆಲಸ, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಕುಟುಂಬ, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ನಗು… ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿಯೇ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥತೆ ಅವರ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಅಚಾನಕ್ ತಿರುವು ತಂದು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿತು.
ಮಗನಿಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ವರ್ಷ, ಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಆರು ವರ್ಷವಿದ್ದಾಗ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿಸದೇ ಅವರು ಮನೆಬಿಟ್ಟರು. ಆ ಹೊರಡುವಿಕೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ದೀರ್ಘವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಯಾರೂ ಊಹಿಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದವು. ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳು ಉತ್ತರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಉಳಿದವು. ನೆರೆಹೊರೆಯವರು, ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ “ಇನ್ನು ಬದುಕಿಲ್ಲ” ಎಂದು ನಂಬತೊಡಗಿದರು.
ಆದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ.
ಸಮಾಜದ ಒತ್ತಡ, ಏಕಾಂತ, ನಷ್ಟ ಎಲ್ಲದರ ಮಧ್ಯೆಯೂ “ಅವರು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ” ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಉಳಿಯಿತು. ಈ ಕಾಯುವಿಕೆಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆಯೇ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ದುರ್ಘಟನೆ ಆಕೆಯ ಮಗಳು ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ನಿಧನರಾದರು. ತಂದೆಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ನೋಡಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಈ ನೋವು ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಮೌನವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೊಳಿಸಿತು.

ಇತ್ತ ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣರು… ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಅಲೆಮಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಅನೇಕ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿದರು. ಹಲವಾರು ಎನ್‌ಜಿಒಗಳ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರು. ಕೊನೆಗೆ, ಕುಟುಂಬ ಪುನರ್ಮಿಲನದ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿದ ಥನಲ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷ ಉದ್ದೇಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸ್ನೇಹಾಲಯ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪುನರ್ವಸತಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ , ಮಂಜೇಶ್ವರಕ್ಕೆ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿತು.
ಜನವರಿ 6, 2025 ರಂದು ಅವರು ಖಿದ್ಮತ್ ಥನಲ್ ಸ್ನೇಹವೀಡು ಮೂಲಕ ಸ್ನೇಹಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದರು.
ಅಂದು ಅವರು ದೈಹಿಕ ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥತೆ, ಭ್ರಮಾತ್ಮಕ ಆಲೋಚನೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ತೀವ್ರ ಮನೋವಿಕಾರದಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ತಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರು, ಊರು, ಕುಟುಂಬ ಯಾವುದೂ ನೆನಪಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಂಭವಾಯಿತು ಮಾನವೀಯತೆಯ ಮೌನ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ.

ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 26 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಕುಟುಂಬ ಪತ್ತೆಯಾಯಿತು. ಪುನರ್ಮಿಲನದ ಕ್ಷಣ… ಪದಗಳು ಅಸಹಾಯಕವಾಗಿದ್ದವು.
ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪತ್ನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಗನ ಎದುರು ನಿಂತಾಗ ನಂಬಲಾಗದ ವಾಸ್ತವ ಕಣ್ಣೀರಾಗಿ ಹರಿದುಬಂದಿತು.

Gopalakrishna went missing 26 years ago , when his life took a tragic turn due to severe mental disturbance. At the time, he was working as a watchman in a private hospital, leading a simple but stable life. He left home silently, without informing anyone, when his son was just four years old and his daughter six—unaware that his departure would stretch into decades.

Gopalakrishna and his wife had two children—a daughter and a son. While the family waited endlessly for his return, tragedy struck again: his daughter passed away due to health complications, never getting the chance to see her father return home. The loss deepened the family’s sorrow, and over time, neighbors and relatives came to believe that Gopalakrishna was no longer alive.

Despite social pressure and the passage of time, she continued to believe that her husband might one day return. Her waiting became a silent act of faith—carried through years of hardship, loss, and loneliness.

During his years of wandering, Gopalakrishna moved across places and came into contact with several NGOs. Eventually, Thanal, recognizing the possibility of family tracing and reunion, admitted him to Snehalaya Charitable Trust specifically for the purpose of reunification.

He was admitted to Snehalaya on January 6, 2026, after being brought from Khidmat Thanal Snehaveedu. At the time of admission, he was suffering from somatic complaints, delusional thoughts, and psychosis, disconnected from reality and unable to recall his identity or past.

Under the guidance and direction of Brother Joseph Crasta, the Snehalaya team provided continuous psycho-social care, medical support, and patient rehabilitation. Through months of counseling, trust-building, and sustained humanitarian effort, his memories slowly resurfaced, allowing the team to trace his roots back to Tamil Nadu and locate his family.

When Gopalakrishna finally stood before his wife and son after 26 years, the moment dissolved into uncontrollable tears. His wife broke down completely, struggling to believe that the man she had waited for—through decades of pain and social isolation—was standing alive before her. Family members cried openly, holding him close, mourning the years lost and the daughter who could not witness this miracle.
